How do you treat yourself?

We can think of so many ways to treat ourselves – a special event, a tasty dessert, a nap on the porch hammock, a box of popcorn at the movies, a bouquet of fresh flowers. We often justify splurges by telling ourselves that we deserve them – and I am not suggesting that we do not! We work hard. We do things for others. We are good people. We save money.

When I get ready to exercise, I do not think of it as a treat. During the day, I do not look forward to going to the gym. I have to remind myself throughout the day, so I am less likely to “forget” to go because of my busy life.

I need to exercise my body! I should! I have to! Sometimes, I put so much pressure on myself that I want to treat myself by doing something else!

Thankfully, I am usually successful in the end, and make it to the gym.

One night while exercising, I had just crossed the threshold from “I don’t want to be here” to “Boy, does this make my body and my mind feel great!” I always look forward to this moment. I know it will arrive – eventually — which keeps me going. Once it happens, the rest of my workout is a breeze.

Suddenly, I had an epiphany.  I realized that I deserve a healthy body. I deserve regular exercise, healthy portions of good food, plenty of water and a good night’s sleep! Why? Because they make me feel great! I am more patient with my family. I am less likely to be injured. I have more energy.


Why not turn the things we do not look forward to – but know are good for us – upside down?

Why not say, “I deserve it!”?
