Helping you plan, start and grow your business
Take Care of Your Physical Self
We work hard to create success for our businesses. We also have many personal responsibilities – bills to pay, homes and cars to maintain, and people to support emotionally. Therefore, it is often easy to push aside our own physical health needs.
We should not forget about our physical selves! Twenty-six years of self-employment have taught me that it is critical to:
o Establish a relationship with a primary care physician. If we need medical care, it is important to have a doctor who knows us and our history – and whom we trust.
o Have annual physicals.
o Schedule recommended preventive exams: mammograms, colonoscopies, and the like. Do not put them off, even if you have no symptoms! For example, over 12% of American women will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes, and almost 5% of Americans will develop colorectal cancer. Preventive exams do not take long, establish a baseline for the future, and are far cheaper than the financial and emotional costs of dealing with illness while running a business.
o Have regular dental visits. The bigger the cavity, the more painful and expensive it is to treat.
o Take a break. Staying out of the office at least one day a week can leave us refreshed and help alleviate stress – minimizing high-blood pressure and other medical complications.
o Get regular exercise. Long hours at work can cause stiffness, soreness and sleep problems that can be alleviated by moving our bodies in healthy ways. Something as simple as a daily walk can help.
o Take a vacation at least once a year. Longer breaks can help us feel even more fully relaxed.
What are you doing to take care of your body – your self? Is there something you need to do or schedule right now?
