How Does Social Media Make You Feel?
Marketing and media experts agree. Social media are major influences on our lives. We are drawn to them. What do we have to say to the world? What are other people saying? We want to know!
The question is this: How do we feel after we have immersed ourselves in Facebook or Twitter or any other social medium for an extended period?
Social media is not inherently bad. I like keeping up with family and friends. However, all too often, I walk away because I do not like how I feel. Odd, you say, for someone who blogs. But, true nonetheless.
Emotional landmines are plentiful, sometimes intentionally laid and sometimes the result of unclear or thoughtless communication. Too many people are fighting – sometimes screaming – to be heard, to influence, or to manipulate others. There is too much name-calling and nastiness, generally related to politics and evident on all sides of the political spectrum. And then, there are the vulgar voices – most visible to me on Twitter.
For the past several days, I have struggled over this, trying to find the words to express myself. Yesterday, the very words I needed were read to me – those of Saint Francis:
Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I many not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.
Until we meet again,
