Helping you plan, start and grow your business

Are Entrepreneurs Bred or Born?

I can spot sure-fire entrepreneurs by the way their eyes light up when talking about their businesses.

As Gary Vaynerchuk (@garyvee) said:

“A real entrepreneur is in it because she or he has no choice. They are dragged by their heart to build businesses and execute them. They aren’t driven by the money or the current coolness of it. They do it because they have no choice, not because it’s ‘hot’ right now.”

Exactly! Owning a business has been a life-long dream of mine. Perhaps the same is true of you.

Of course, others have come, reluctantly, into the self-employment fold. In fact, my husband fell into the “dragged kicking and screaming” category – until about six weeks in. Then, he was hooked. A true convert.

The highlight of my spring has been working with Meredith College, my alma mater, through their expanding entrepreneurship program. Initially, I was asked to screen student proposals for the first annual Meredith Social Entrepreneurship Competition. The unexpected moment came when they told me my book would be used in the new entrepreneurship class! Soon after, I had the honor of handing copies to individual students in the classroom. Next, I assisted with a workshop for competitors and, ultimately, served as a judge.

The engagement of the young participants was palpable. Some of their ideas made the judges clap, others touched our hearts, and two satisfied our taste buds. Many will own their own business one day. We could see that spark in them — the spark that will not go away.

With my passion for small business reinvigorated, The Entrepreneur’s Friend blog is returning! Periodically, I will share my findings and observations on Our Work or Our Lives as business owners. Hopefully, you will join me on this journey, sharing your own experiences, concerns, questions and ideas. Even – no, especially — if you disagree!

Please join me on Twitter (@newbizfriend) or on Facebook (Cynthia Wheaton, The Entrepreneur’s Friend or Cynthia Wheaton, Author). Whichever path you choose, I will love seeing the spark in you!

Are entrepreneurs born or bred? That depends. Which are you?

Until we meet again,

The Entrepreneur’s Friend
